AT-Dick's Creek Gap to Whiteoak Stomp
near Hiawassi, GA
The weather was great with sunny skies and warm, late-winter temperatures. The Georgia Appalachian Trail Club continues to maintain this trail in excellent condition, but it still has plenty of rocks and roots in places. It didn't take long for us to shed our jackets for the steep, 1.5-mile climb beginning at 1.1 miles. There were frequent views of the surrounding mountains and valleys as we hiked. The highlight of the hike was a short bushwhack up to Whiteoak Stomp. This off-trail climb did satisfy our curiosity, but for some reason our lady hikers felt the urge to "stomp" around the hilltop upon arrival. Today, we passed just a single couple of thru-hikers from Florida hiking north toward Katahdin.

A curious, but spooky tree, still living, atop Whiteoak Stomp Today's Hikers (L-R): Roger, Shelia, Mike, Betty, Terre, Linda & Pam Saddle-up. It really wasn't as cold as the heavy jackets suggest. A familiar starting point. And up we go. No time to stop at Carnes Cascade on the way up. A first view of Lake Burton from the trail. Having a good time on Whiteoak Stomp. Somewhat of a view from Whiteoak Stomp. Always a nice view from the vista just past Powell Mountain. Munch time on the vista, but no time for a nap. The last time we passed by this tree, a squirrel was demanding a "toll" of nut per hiker passing by.
