Opossum Creek Falls Trail
near Long Creek, SC
We had another mild, sunny day, on our hike on this familiar trail. We were fortunate to see a fair, not spectacular, number of wildflowers. However the recent rains made for a very nice display of water coming over Opossum Creek Falls. The trail was in good condition but with several passable blowdowns along the trail. All-in-all, "A great day for a hike!" Today's Hikers:

Opossum Creek Falls . . . nice water today. Today's Hikers (L-R): Matt, Alicia, Sharon, Linda, Mike, Toby, Terre, Don, Pam, Ken, Claudia, Beth, Charles, Renee, Gerald, Jenny, Edwin, Mary Lu, Jim, Lynn, Angela, Mike J. & Vic A big group of 23 hikers today at the trailhead. Thank goodness Toby's tail is wagging because that look tells me to back off. Anyone need a hiking stick? A nice trail at the start. We pass by Camp Creek Falls, but there doesn't seem to be a safe way to get to it . . . too bad. Some of the several blowdowns along the lower half of this trail. The first of the wild flowers-L: Pussytoes; UR: Foamflower; LR: Green and Gold. Lots of Dwarf iris, but the overnight rains were not kind to them. Perhaps the find of the day, Jack-in-the Pulpit. Left: False Solomon Seal; Right: Appalachian Barren Strawberry Headed up to Opossum Creek Falls Upper: Perfoliate bellwort; LR: White wood violet; ; LL: Creeping phlox Gerald helping folks across a shallow stream crossing on the way to Opossum Creek Falls. Lots of Large Toadshade Trillium on the side trail to the falls. This particular cluster was growing on a wide boulder downstream from the falls. Checking out Opossum Creek Falls. Mr. Snail enjoying a sunny afternoon. Spotted down the embankment: a very large Trillium about to bloom with the 3-leaf width estimated at 12-15 inches each and bud below leaves ???. Views down and up the Chattooga from our lunch spot. A beaver has taken his lunch break too! Pinxter flower or Early azalea seen near the trailhead.
