Ravens Cliff with Homer & Long Creek Falls, SC

This was the best hiking weather day in quite a while with cool 60's temperatures, sunny skies, lower humidity and an occasional breeze. The main trails leading to Ravens Rock, Homer Falls and Long Creek Falls are quite good with just a few passable deadfalls. However, the final paths down to and out of the cliff and falls in all cases take quite a bit of care since the trails are very steep and can be slippery. There are some rocks, roots, and trees to hold onto during these descents and climbs. We saw just a few late blooming wildflowers. This hike continues to be "moderately to strenuously difficult and not worth taking if you are not comfortable climbing down to the features which cannot be seen otherwise." However, the hike features are quite beautiful if you are willing to take on the challenge.

Long Creek Falls Today's Hikers (L-R): Ken & Cutie Pie, Jane, Edwin, Heather & Toby, Jenny & Mike We started off for the first 1/2 mile on an unused continuation of Turkey Ridge Rd. Soon after our start we take a side trail on Pinckney Branch Road that changes into a gradual then steep descent to Ravens Cliff. These photos of looking up and downstream on the Chattooga River were taken at the second of three levels of Ravens Cliff. Perhaps being able to get to Homer Falls is as satisfying as seeing it. Jane Voss (shown here), Edwin, Heather and I are challenged in our climbing abilities. Jane Voss is fascinated by the unique trees on the trail today. These were some of the more eye-catching wildflowers or their seed pods seen today: Hearts-a-burstin; Primrose, Woodland sunflower & Lobelia. We hiked to Long Creek Falls after another steep descent. The falls is located slightly upstream from where Long Creek joins the Chattooga River. ~25-feet, two-tier falls. Not a big flow today. What a great place for lunch. More lunch pics. The pups take the "most photogenic" titles today. One last climb-out for the return hike back to the trailhead. Good job everyone!
