HIKERS - Phil Brownrigg, Dick Metzgar, Leigh Ann Miller, Wanda Miller, Wayne Miller, Bob Presley, Donna Presley, Tony Presley, Dan Ross, Bob Thompson, Geri Whitaker, David Whitaker.TRAIL INFO. - Today's hike was on the Lady Slipper Trail in the Chattahoochee National Forest Lake Russell Recreation Area near Cornelia, GA - Total - 7.2 miles.

Directions: Take Ga 365/U.S. 23 North from Gainesville past Cornelia to Hwy 197. Turn right for approximately 3 miles until dead-end. Right on Dicks Hill Parkway for approx. ¾ mile. Turn left onto the paved Lake Russell Road. .

Another great day for a hike! Partly cloudy, and cool with temps. ranging from the mid 20's to the mid 40's F.

Great Blue Heron, Dark-eyed Junco, Turkey Vulture, Black-capped Chickadee, Carolina Wren, White-breasted Nuthatch, Pileated Woodpecker, Robin

  • Nancytown Lake was partially frozen over after two nights in the teens.
  • After a half-mile walk, we arrive at the trail head.

  • A stream leading into the upper end of Nancytown Lake.
  • Here we encounter a trail obstruction. Jet has no problem with it!
  • A colorful patch of lichen called British Soldiers (Cladonia cristatella)
  • Appropriate for the Christmas season, we find this American Holly (Ilex opaca).
  • This cove at the upper end of the lake was iced over.
