Duncan Ridge Trail - Wolfpen Gap South to AT
A wet day for a hike on Sep. 7 due to a mid-morning rain, but a very nice day for hike on Sep. 9 with sunny skies and a cool, 60°F, breeze along much of the trail. The trail is overgrown in some sections with loose rocks and roots in other sections. This trail is difficult for the first 0.6 mile with a steep 700 foot climb, but much less steep for the rest of the hike. In the winter there would be some nice views of the valleys and Vogel State Park, but only brief and mostly obscured views this time of the year. There is a high canopy above the entire route. There were a few late season wildflowers with blooming White Snakeroot along most of the trail and obscuring the path in several sections.

This tree along the first part of the trail is the cover photo for its tenacity! Today's Hikers (L-R): Ray, Jack, Inna, Mike, Heather, Renee, Vic, Jenny, Gerald, Christine, Lynn, Tim & Angela Here's where we started! Up we go! Lots of this White Snakeroot along this trail this time of year. Lots of color in this photo in addition to the red berries of this False Solomon's Seal. Now that's large mushroom !! Other fungus along the way. White Snakeroot (Eupatorium rugosum) is the flower of the day on this hike. Purple False Foxglove (Agalinis purpurea) There is a trail there . . . . somewhere? A couple of large patches of large cinnamon ferns, although well past showing their "cinnamon sticks." A well marked trail intersection. Time to turn around and head back. Met a Maryland thru-hiker here who had split the AT and was headed north to finish the hike. A peak through the treees of the lake at Vogel State Park. An occasional view of the surrounding mountians. A last warning to someone off-track!
