Martin Creek Falls and Pinnacle Knob via the Bartram Trail
near Clayton, GA
The trail was in good overall condition today, although it wasn't a pleasant day to hike being warm and very humid. Everyone hiked to Martin Creek Falls with three hikers proceeding on to Pinnacle Knob for a beautiful view to the west. The bridge over Becky Branch below the falls is still out and required a wet crossing for some. We were surprised by the widespread blooming of Rhododendron throughout the area. Not a lot of wildflowers otherwise. We did encounter a few critters . . . a large spider, a spotted newt and a couple of dogs from an encampment (not campsite) along Martin Creek. Vic became intimately familiar with one of the pooches who bit him with the owner later trying to get Inna to take it home . . really! Good job everyone!.

Martin Creek Falls. We should have gone swimming after the hike ended! Today's hikers (L-R) Top: Jim, Jeanne, Edwin, Jenny, Gerald, Angela, Lib, Renee, Rich & Inna; Bottom: Mike, Vic & Bruce Not a bad trail at all. Some roadside color, but not on the trail. Uh-oh! Dr. Inna to the rescue, but wanting to see Jeanne's insurance card first. But these Rhododendron seemed to be everywhere, unlike the trail to Scaly Mountain last week. You know, when you're the last hiker in the group, berry pickings are not plentiful! But, we did see some wild raspberry and blackberries along the way. These Rhododendron were amazing in growing out a stump. Becky Branch Falls was nice, but required crossing it without the usual bridge which had been removed. Alright ladies, time to head up to Pinnacle Knob! A distinctive change in the forest half way up Pinnacle Knob. Were here, Mike, Inna & Renee. Agreed, we do look a bit hot and tired after that climb! Really nice view from Pinnacle Knob and worth the effort. What are those peaks out there? Selfie time! Our critter friends today.
